Minor League observations: Brian Matusz

June 17th, 2009

One of the great things about where I live is that I am 30 minutes from 2 major league teams and 10 minutes from the minor league Bowie Baysox. With Brian Matusz making his debut for Bowie tonight Derrick and I decided to catch the game.

I picked up Matusz in our league’s minor league draft because I had been somewhat familiar with his work in college but tonight was the first time I got to see him live in action.

This post is going to be another example from “Year 1″ in the keeper league (I have a feeling there will be many of these this year).

One of the philosophies I have played the last couple of years is punting saves. In my expansion draft I ended up selecting Matt Capps but never selected another closer to pair him with. Knowing that I will not make any serious gains in the saves category, I decided it was time to see what I could get for Capps.

I think one of the best ways to learn is by sharing real life experiences. And since this site is about focusing on the under-served keeper league, I figure the best way to open up discussion is to share my personal experiences thus far.

To give some background, I inherited a team this year in an established league along with another owner. To make things fair, the other owner and I drafted rosters from the two derelict teams we were taking over and then had to narrow our roster to 14 keepers (the league standard).

Allow myself to introduce … uh … myself

Hello and welcome to Keeper Experts, a blog devoted specifically to fantasy baseball keeper leagues! My name is Jim and I am the creator of this blog. To get things going around here, I thought I would introduce myself and (hopefully) give you a reason to keep coming back.

The reason for starting this blog is pretty simple. I have played fantasy baseball for a number of years but only recently earned a spot in my first keeper league (yes, I had to prove I was ready for the league). In an effort to be as competitive as quickly as possible, I scoured the internet for keeper league-specific sites but couldn’t find anything. In fact, what I did find was the most popular fantasy baseball sites basically mentioned which players to target in keeper leagues but never mentioned why.
