Keeper Implications: Hunter, Cabrera

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday and is getting back in the mood for fantasy baseball. There have been some interesting signings the last couple of weeks, and here is the impact (if any) they should have on your plans going forward.

Torii HunterHunter has put together a long, remarkable career but let’s face it – it’s been a few years now since he’s been keeper material. True, Hunter is aging gracefully and still putting up respectable numbers but are you going to bet your team’s future on him? Keep his name tucked away for your auction or draft but surely you have better long term options that are worth holding on to.

Melky CabreraI plan to go more in depth on Cabrera later this week but I have to admit that this is an interesting signing for Toronto. Regardless of how much his performance really was impacted by his PED use, he is showing improved power and is moving from a pitcher’s park to a hitter’s park this year. Once he retakes the field he should put up good numbers but given that his past is so checkered, I’m not making any big sacrifices to keep him around.

Any other moves that have taken place to this point really don’t have much impact on any player’s direct value so if a player you’re interested in isn’t listed here, it’s because not much has changed. However, if you’d like my take on a player or move, just let me know in the comments section.

About Jim Higgins

Jim grew up in San Diego the son of a Washington, D.C. native so naturally he roots for the Washington Redskins and San Diego Padres. After seeing his favorite teams win a couple of titles early in his life, he has spent the last 20 years wondering if his teams will ever amount to anything again. At least he has multiple fantasy baseball and football titles to soften the blow.

  1. Dayton Moore says:

what do you think about the royals possibly trading myers for a SP?

  2. If I’m a GM with a pitcher the Royals covet, I’m making phone calls every 20 minutes to try and land Myers. There are maybe 5 or so pitchers I’m not trading for Myers but everyone else in the league is fair game. Too bad I can’t get the Myers owner in my league to trade him for James Shields…
