Looking for breakout players for 2011 and beyond

January 20th, 2011

[NOTE FROM JIM: I wanted to take a moment to welcome my friend and the commissioner of my keeper league, Derrick Boyd, to Keeper Experts. Derrick is a very knowledgeable keeper league player and I am excited to have his voice and point of view on board.]

Fantasy baseball leagues are often won by those who roster low-cost or late-round breakout players in addition to the perennial studs. In 2010, winning teams rostered Carlos Gonzalez, Delmon Young, Kelly Johnson, Jose Bautista, Mat Latos, David Price and Ubaldo Jimenez. In 2009, it was Ben Zobrist, Aaron Hill, Adam Lind, Zack Greinke, Andrew Bailey and Josh Johnson.

As I have mentioned before, every keeper league and every manager’s experience is different. While many people join a keeper league during the league’s inaugural season, many of us also come in as a replacement for a dud owner who failed to pay attention to his team and just let it fall apart.

I fall into the latter category.

In an effort to actually come up with helpful stuff for the fantasy baseball community I am going to start a couple of series that I hope will provide insight and answer the questions the keeper league managers are struggling to find the answers to. These different series will debut over the next few weeks, with today being the debut for one of them.

I was looking at my blog stats recently and noticed that a lot of my search engine traffic comes from people trying to find out if a specific player is keeper worthy. So let’s answer that question. Below are the top player searches that have brought people to this blog and whether the player in question is keeper worthy.

I apologize again for the long delays between posts, and in all honesty I meant to get this up last week. I spent a couple of nights last week at the Bowie Baysox, including an 11 K, 1 hit performance by Brian Matusz on Tuesday. But since I previously covered Matusz on this blog, I decided to talk about someone new this time.

On Friday night one of my league mates asked me to come with him to check out one of his prized prospects, the Pirates Pedro Alvarez. One of the most highly sought commodities in last year’s draft, Alvarez was taken second overall by Pittsburgh and has shown plenty of power in the minors. That power led to a promotion to Double A Altoona but since the promotion.

One of the great things about where I live is that I am 30 minutes from 2 major league teams and 10 minutes from the minor league Bowie Baysox. With Brian Matusz making his debut for Bowie tonight Derrick and I decided to catch the game.

I picked up Matusz in our league’s minor league draft because I had been somewhat familiar with his work in college but tonight was the first time I got to see him live in action.
